A Porch on Every Floor

Above: the first-floor porch is great during spring and fall but too hot in summer, since it faces south. We often eat out here, weather permitting. The cats--Simon and Sophie--like it too. I refloored the first and second porches with vintage yellow pine--and did it by hand before I discovered what a great invention nail guns are.

Below: the second floor porch is narrower than the first because it accommodatea a bay. Apparenlty, these were sleeping porches, designed to give city dwellers some relief during Baltimore's hot, humid summers. First and second floor porches have huge banks of sliding windows. These took a lot of time to repair. As the porches are all of wood, they need painting and repairing about every two-three years. It took me nearly ten years to finish all the repairs they needed. This included stripping and repainting all of the wood.
