The Second Floor cont.

Above, details from the master bedroom. Left: the fireplace that the original builders bungled. They underestimated the dimensions and weren't able to build a full firebox; so the builder signed off on the mistake (behind the mantel), then tiled over the firebox. It's the only fireplace on the second floor that doesn't work. A 100 years later, Jill tore into the tiled-over firebox to see if there was any treasure hidden back there. That's when we discovered that the fireplace has always been tiled over. We replaced the modest original mantel with this double oak piece. Then Jill retiled the face and skirt. Right: the master bedroom ceiling light. Buying lights for the house has been one of the most fun projects.

Below left: the corner window of the master bedroom (Simon sitting in the window). Right: what the corner looked like when we bought the house

Below, adjacent to the master bedroom is the dressing room. I built the mirrored closet for Jill's stuff. Originally the dressing room would have had an armoir here instead. Compared to us, most Victorians owned remarkably little clothing.
